John Harvey of the Littlehampton Shipyard
This shows John Harvey standing on the swing bridge which was opened in May 1908. The card was posted on 1st July that year. John and his brother Wlliam Benjamin took over the boatyard on the death of their father Henry in 1868. When William died in 1893, John was assisted by his nephew, Henry Hilder Harvey.
John and Henry ran the business until 1916. They had been building a series of ketch sailing barges, and just two more were built after 1916; the "Wessex" in 1918, and the "Moultonian" in 1919, possibly the last of her kind to be built in the country.
