Sailing Barge at South Woods

This unused card was published by William Wareham of Littlehampton, probably pre WW1 as it was printed in Saxony which would have been unlikely after the war.

The scene shows a small Arun barge, double ended, using a loose footed gaff rig, rather than the usual sprit sail rig seen on other barges in the river. Large oars are being employed in place of the typical bifurcated poles seen in other pictures of Arun barges.

The craft is heading south towards Arundel and may have a cargo of chalk, possibly from the pit at Houghton.
