Stopham Bridge
Stopham Bridge has always a popular subject for postcards. This one is by C.V.G.C. Travers from the early 1900s. Notice that the central arch (on the right of the photograph) is higher than the other arches.
Stopham Bridge is featured in our Pulborough video.
This card features a painting of Stopham Bridge. The White Hart Inn, close to the picturesque bridge, was a popular destination for small craft on the Arun. The card was published by A. Vivian Mansell & Co. Ltd of London, and posted in Billingshurst in 1943 by an unknown sender. It was addressed to Mr. & Miss. Procter in Brockley.
The back of the card is quite distinctive, using biblical quotes for the text accompanying the little pen sketches.
Our 2002 documentary The Lost Wey to the Sea includes a sequence downstream from Pallingham Lock to Stopham Bridge. The words used by Jarrett Bacon Dashwood on the soundtrack (taken from his 1868 book From the Thames to the Solent) seem just as relevant to the surroundings now as they did then.
This part of the filming was squeezed between a rain storm and approaching darkness, so it was something of a challenge to complete.
