The Dearlings of Bury and West Burton

This is the back of a postcard from Flo to her father Edward, one of several collected over some years. Edward Dearling was a chauffeur before he rejoined the Army in WW1. His brother, George, sometimes referred to as the ‘Blind Carrier’, lived in West Burton and, among his other claims to fame, had a reputation as a folk singer. In fact, there are eleven references to his traditional songs on the Sussex Traditions website, featuring information collected in 1907. Postcard texts often provide leads to unexpected quarters.
