Houghton
Houghton is a small ribbon village on the B2139 between Arundel and Storrington, linked to Amberley by Houghton Bridge which was built in medieval style in 1875, and is Grade 2 listed. Houghton is eleven and a half miles by river from the sea, and the river has a significent tidal flow which makes navigating the bridge’s arches a challenge for larger craft.. The bridge and surroundings have always been popular with photographers including early postcard publishers such as W.J. Drewett, J. White, F.D. Miller and C.V. Travers. The Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre occupies the site north of the bridge which was a cement works up to WW1, and a regular destination for Arun barges.
