Postcard of the Month: February 2021

Charlotte Sophia at Littlehampton

This Frank Spry postcard shows the ketch at Railway Wharf and is one of a series apparently photographed on the same day. She was a typical small coaster of the time and her crew of three can be seen gathered at the stern. As she was registered at Portsmouth, her details are archived in the Portsmouth City Records Office and accessible via its website. Her logbooks provide details of voyages and crew, including dates of visiting Littlehampton and who was aboard.

The Harbourmaster’s Journals for the port in the West Sussex Records Office show which other vessels were in on these dates and, as some of these are visible in the photo series, the likely time appears to be May 1911.
